We take a look back at three of the biggest stories from Florida State in the past week.
FLORIDA STATE DOMINANCE IN THE 1990S THE BEST EVER DECADE IN COLLEGE FOOTBALL
FSU won two national titles, average 10.9 wins per season and never finish with fewer than 10 wins and lower than a No. 4 rankings during the decade. As a result, the Seminoles were named the top team of the decade over Nebraska and Florida. And all 10 FSU teams were among the top 30 teams of the decade. Nebraska had seven of the top 30 teams and next was Florida with three.
But which FSU team was the best? The 1993 national championships that went 12-1 and outscored its opponents by an average of 31.3 ppg is the No. 2 team of the decade, behind the 1995 Nebraska team.
FSU STUDENT GOVERNMENT WANTS BAN ON WEARING NATIVE AMERICAN HEADDRESSES
Florida State’s student government passed a resolution that would discourage Seminoles fans from wearing Native American headdresses at sporting events and is asking the university administration to consider wearing headdresses be viewed as a violation of the student code of conduct. The document, obtained by FSView, states, that “the wearing of any Native American headdresses shall no longer be permitted into athletic arenas at FSU,” and was voted in by a 27-4 margin with five abstaining.
The SGA said it passed the resolution because many of the headdresses worn at athletic events are representative of other tribes – in particular Plains tribes like the Sioux – and not the Seminoles.
FSU HAS THIRD TOUGHEST SCHEDULE IN THE COUNTRY
Florida State has the third toughest schedule in the nation according to ESPN’s Football Power Index. Jimbo Fisher’s team faces five opponents that could crack the preseason top 25 and two others that could be just outside the top 25. They face two SEC teams (Ole Miss and Florida) along with South Florida among their four non-conference games and the two teams that are expected to be the atop the ACC Coastal Division in their crossover games – Miami and North Carolina.
The toughest opponent appears to be Clemson, also a likely preseason top 10. That game, along with Coastal Division champion North Carolina and rival Florida are at home with FSU playing Ole Miss in Orlando, traveling to Louisville and South Florida.
